Formalni engleski koristi mandative subjunctive (that someone do/be) u zahtevima, preporukama i važnim odlukama.
That + osnovni oblik
Posle insist, demand, recommend i suggest u formalnom jeziku često sledi that + subject + infinitiv bez to.
U subjunctive konstrukciji koristimo resign.
Subjunctive be
Uz sve subjekte ostaje be: It is essential that she be present.
Formalni subjunctive bira be.
Were to / lest
Were + subject + to… koristi formalni hipotetički uslov; lest + osnovni oblik označava sprečavanje neželjenog ishoda.
Za formalnu inverziju: Were he to agree.
